John was born in 1706 in Piscataway, MD.  John's father was John Gardiner Gardner and his mother was Susannah Barton.  His paternal grandparents are Richard Gardiner and Elizabeth Ware (Wear Weir); his maternal grandfather was William Barton and his maternal grandmother is unk Beavan. He had a brother and two sisters, named Clement Gardiner, Susannah Barton Gardiner and Elizabeth Gardiner.  He was the second oldest of the four children.  He died at the age of 37 in 1743 in Chaptico, St Mary's, MD.
