  • Old Stone Tavern deemed 'historic'

    In a move described as a no-brainer, the city planning commission
    yesterday approved historic status for the Old Stone Tavern, a West
    End landmark that dates to the 1700s.
    
    Preservation planner Katherine Molnar told the commission she and the
    Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission have discussed having an
    archaeologist work on site to determine its exact age.
    
    The earliest owner, Daniel Elliott -- namesake of the Elliott
    neighborhood -- operated an Indian trading post on the site before
    building on what is now 434 Greentree Road. Along the early route of
    the Washington Pike, the inn's many visitors included plotters of the
    Whiskey Rebellion, Ms. Molnar said.
    
    Dru Simeone, executive director of the West Pittsburgh Partnership,
    said her group is willing to help raise money to restore it.
    
    "Occasionally we get a no-brainer," commission member Paul Dick
    before the vote. "This is one of those."
    
    City Council is the final arbiter of the nomination. Its action is
    not yet scheduled. . . .
