George William Lee Crow

    George was born to Harry A.  & Ruby Crow on September 9, 1914 in Moberly, Missouri.  He lived there until he was about 11 years old when his parents moved to Jefferson City, Missouri.  He graduated from high school here and worked as an apprentice meat cutter with his brother Harold at a local Kroger store.  I'm not sure how he and my mother met, but in February of 1934 they sneaked out on a lunch break and got married in Columbia , Missouri. They were both 19 years, old at the time.  George was working at Garrett's Market on the corner of Hitt and Locust in Columbia at the time for $14 a week.  They lived in an apartment on the corner of College Ave. & Bass Ave. From here he worked as a traveling salesman for the Mayrose Meat Co. This writer was born the following December and shortly thereafter we started moving around from place to place.  First one job and then another.  It was this way through Georges entire life. I never saw a man work as hard as he did and get nowhere. He just couldn't stay with any one thing long enough to get anywhere with it.  In his working years he was a meat cutter, plumber, sailor, household appliance salesman, repairman, Stanley Home Products salesman and a Folger Coffee salesman. After Ruth died in 1959 he married Alice Tucker in Mattoon, Illinois. Alice had been one of the nurses caring for Ruth in her final illness.  Very shortly after that he came down with Multiple Sclerosis and died from the complications of this disease in the Downey Veterans Hospital, Great Lakes. Illinois in 1966.
