Newton was born on September 8th, 1802 in Green Hill, Wilson County, TN.  Newton's father was Rev Ezekiel Cloyd and his mother was Rebecca Williamson.  His paternal grandparents were John Bartholomew Cloyd and Margaret Scott; his maternal grandparents were John Williamson and Sarah. He had a brother named Thomas Williamson.  He was the younger of the two children.
