Richard was born about 1848.  Richard's father was Thomas T Castleman and his mother was Laura Carlisle Liddle.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Castleman and Hannah Bushrod Frost. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Robert L, Thomas W, Andrew, Mary C, Laura F and Nora.  He was the fifth oldest of the seven children.
