Bannister was born about 1870.  Bannister's father was William Marshall Castleman and his mother was Louise Boyly.  His paternal grandparents were Lewis Bushrod Castleman and Nancy Ellen Hall. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Victor, Junius, Louis, William, Catherine, Martha and Margaret.
