Colomban was born on November 20th, 1830 in Saint-Coulomb, Bretagne, France. Colomban's father was Jean François, Alain BASLE and his mother was Colombe Marie GIRAULT.  His paternal grandparents were Jean BASLE and Jeanne DESPRES; his maternal grandparents were Henri Julien, joseph GIRAULT and Colombe Marie, Jeanne LAUNAY. He had three brothers named Jean, Henri and Charles.  He was the second youngest of the four children.
