Elly was born on December 24th, 1897 in Brno (Bruenn), Moravia, Czechoslovakia.  Elly's father was Siegmund Stiassny and her mother was Marie Schostal.  Her paternal grandparents were Bernhard Stiassny and Josepha Huberova. She had two brothers named Ernst and Franz.  She was the second oldest of the three children.
