Ludolf was born in 1144 in Loccum, Hannover, Prussia.¹ Ludolf's father was Count Wulbrand of Loccum and Hallermund I and his mother was Countess Beatrix of Rheineck. His paternal grandparents were Count Burchard of Loccum I and <Unknown>; his maternal grandparents were Count Otto of Salm and Countess Gertrud of Northeim. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Burchard, Wulbrand, Beatrix and Adelheid. He was the third oldest of the five children.
