    Alexander was a small child when he came tp Virginia from Maryland. Moved family to Breckinridge Co. Kentucy ca 1821. Had ten or twelve children. Buried in Marshall cemetery with son Junius and daughter Jane Black.

    A book by Ralph E. Marshall titled DESCENDANTS OF THOMAS MARSHALL BEDFORD CO., VA PLUS HIX-OWEN-NICHOLSON & RELATED FAMILES (Self Published, September 1986). From the information in this book, it appears that our Samuel Marshall was a son of Thomas Marshall, possibly born in Wales. It was in searching for more information about Thomas Marshall that I came across your tree.

    This book suggests an different lineage for Thomas Marshall, the father of my Samuel (and of his brother Alexander Marshall), as follows: "Alexander Marshall, son of the foregoing (Thomas Marshall, a native of Wales) and father of the subject (Junius S. Marshall), was born in Maryland, March 24, 1790. He went with his parents to Virginia when quite young, remaining in that state until about the 1818, at which time he immigrated to Kentucky and located in Hardinsburg, where he engaged in the shoe-making and grocery business. After a few years spent in the town he moved about one mile and a half south to the place where subject (Junius) now lives, on which farm he located, and on which his death occurred January 6, 1867." Ralph Marshall copied this from an article discovered in the summer of 1980 in the Kansas City, Missouri Public Library from the "History of Kentucky, Illustrated 1887 pps. 1072-1073).

    Nancy Oliver's will dated 2 May 1837, probated 26 May 1841. Her estate willed to daughter Betsy Pollard. Nancy and her brother William born twenty five miles from Annapolis in present day Howard County, Maryland but was Anne-Arundel at that time. Her parents not identified as yet , but grandparents were John and Beatrice (cruchly) Oliver, both born in 1693. Name shown as Ann in 1832 affidavit, Bedford Co.

Lewis Stevens married Mary Oliver in 1771. The three Crutchley's are probable cousins of the Oliver family, mentioned in the 1766 will of Dinah Crutchley Hanchett. The William and Daniel Oliver living next to each other, page 13, were probably father and son. The Wells families may have been related to Martin Wells who married Sarah Marshall in 1797.

    Woodson Marshall had stated in his notebook that Riley's "mother maiden name was Oliver, and she belonged to a family of much respectablilty." That description seems to fir John Oliver (1693-1762) and his family in Anne-Arundel Co., Maryland. Practically all the land deeds and mortgages in that county prior to 1800 involve John Oliver and his son Thomas. An Arthur Oliver is mentioned once, in 1731.
    The first big clue came from the 1833 affidavits of William Oliver and Ann Marshall in Bedford Co., VA. William said he was born about 1756 in Anne-Arundel Co., Ma. and Ann said she was born 18 months later (early 1758) 25 miles from Annapolis. Subsequent reserch showed the John Oliver properties were on the south side of the main falls of the Patapsco River which would be west of Baltimore in present day Howard Co. and approximately 25 miles from Annapolis.
    The Maryland source documents for John Oliver involve the Church records of All Hallows Parish, 1693 to 1720, his will dated October 26, 1762 and proven November 16, 1762 and a 1780 land deed when his properties were sold by his son Samuel. The Parish records show John was born September 15, 1693 to Bacon and Ann Oliver. He had a sister Sarah born February 28, 1695 and they were both baptized in 1703. John married Beatrice Crutchley on March 1, 1714 and they had three children baptized--William and Ann on October 2, 1717 and Sarah on July 17, 1720. Then the family moved to another parish where there are no recorded births or marriages before 1800.
    The 1780 land deed shows the Oliver's first obtained 100 acres in 1723 which was called "Margarets Fancy" When the sons were old enough to marry they added 150 acres by deed about 1744. called "Good Fellowship" and then received a patent in 1750 for 140 acres they called "Olivers Chance" Thomas
    Marshall and Nancy (Ann) Oliver were married aroun 1777 and could have lived on or near one of these properties until Samuel Oliver sold them in 1780.
    John Oliver idd not name his children in his will of 1762 but did say he had five sons and three daughters. Testamontary papers with the will mentions Thomas, Samuel, Joseph, Ann Waters and Alice Tuck. Baptismal records gave us the names of William and Sarah while the 1780 deed shows the fifth son was named John. The remaining unanswered question is which of the five sons was the father of our William Oliver and Ann Marshall. Two marriage records and the 1776 census of St. James Parish in Anne-Arundel county makes the William Oliver, born 1715 or 1717 ad the first choice.
    Beatrice Crutchley, wife of John Oliver, was born November 17, 1693 to Thomas and Alice Crutchley in St. James Parish. She had a sister Elizabeth born
    March 17, 1696 and then their mother, Alice, died on May 23, 1697. Thomas had a will dated November 22, 1709 and proven April 8, 1710 in which he mentions two other daughters, Lydia and Ruth, and a son Thomas. Thomas Crutchley first married a Margaret Baldwin about 1679 and he was described as an attorney-at-law in Annapolis. Margaret died in 1690 but we have no clue on the identity of the second wife named Alice.
    John and Beatrice's children
    l. Sarah- no information other then the date of baptism July17, 1920.
    2. Ann Waters- Several families by that surname in 1790 census. She was the only one named in both the baptism and will records.
    3, Alice Tuck- probable the wife of William Tuck who was a glazier and hired to glaze and repair St. James church windows on August 2, 1774. William Tuck was listed in 1790 census not far from Oliver"s.
    4.Joseph- Had a wife named Comfort according to will papers. Named in 1780 deed, probably living outside Anne Arundel County.
    5. John- Named only in 1780 deed. May be the one in Baltimore Co., records who married Alice Twelves on July 6, 1745 and is listed on 1783 tax list. Left a will in 1781 naming a son John and daughter Mary.
    6. Samuel - Represented his brothers John and Joseph when they sold the John Oliver properties on November 4, 1780. Was in Baltimore Co., then but does not appear in any other land records or census. His wife was named Hannah according to will papers.
    7.Thomas- Served as executor of John Oliver will in 1763. Purchased land near Patuxent River in 1764 and died in 1780 or slightly before. His wife Elizabeth received deed to Duvalls Range on February 23, 1781 from Thomas Linthicum. Deed says Thomas left no "Legal Representative or heir in the state of Maryland except Elizabeth Oliver" so they may have been childless. Elizabeth died between December 10, 1815 and January 9, 1816. Her will mentions Jacob, Isaac, Lucy and Rachel Oliver who were probably slaves. Jacob, Lucy and a Francis Oliver apper in 1820 census as free colored.
    8. William - Probably born 1715 or 1717 per baptismal records of All Hallows Parish. He did not get a notice concerning 1762 estate because he was then living on one of John's properties. It seems likely he was deceased before the properties were sold in 1780. The only clue to the name of his wife is a 1754 entry in Anne Arundel testamentary index for a William and Martha Oliver.

The Debt books of Calvert County, beginning in 1753, show that Thomas Marshall had "Coxes Choise" as his dwelling-plantation. This tract he had inherited from his step-father. It lay on the east side of the Patuxent River at the head of a main branch of Wadsworth Creek in All Saints Parish, the northern portion of the county. Thomas Marshall paid quit rents on this tract through the year 1763, when the rents were assumed by his son and heir.
Thomas Marshall was a member of All Saints Church, and on 1-5-1711, at a meeting of the vestry, it was ordered that Thomas Marshall, John Peacock, and Samuel Fowler, Sr., have the pew "where the old passage was." each paying Mr. Sturmy 200 pounds of tobacco. 7-7-1720, he was warden, and was present at a vestry meeting. In 1730 he was chosen tobacco teller, in 1753 he was one of the inspectors for Lower Marlboro warehouse.
Margaret, the wife of Thomas Marshall having died, he married Mary ???,who survived him and later moved to Kent Co., DE.
Thomas Marshall died intestate in 1763. On March 17 of that year, letters of administration were issued to Samuel Austin, with James Gibson and John Gibson as sureties with bond amounting to 500 pounds.April 14the estate was appraised by Richard Ward and William Dare, personal effects amounting to 109 3s, and 8d. June 20 an inventory was filed bythe administrator, Ann Wyley and Mary Stone signed as nearest of kin. The list includes livestock, grain, farm implements, household furniture, nails were counted, 811 in all. At the last:

Samuel Austin died in 1765 before completing his work as administrator.His wife Elizabeth Austinm was appointed in his place. She filed an account on 9-18-1766. It appears that she too did not complete the work,for on 2-9-1768, Charles Grahame, as administrator, filed an account.
Mary Marshall, daughter of Thomas and Margaret Marshall, married John Stone. They lived at the "Defence" which Mary had inherited from her step-grandfather, Samuel Clewly. John's will, probated 3-8-1764, names their nine children. The will was witnessed by Samuel and Elizabeth Austin.

Thomas Marshall, son of William and Elizabeth ( ) Marshall, was born before 1687 in Calvert County. He was reared by his step-father, Samuel Clewly. He married Margaret (???).
Nov. 21, 1709, he was appointed administrator of the estate of Thomas Edwards, deceased.

Feb. 4, 1720, the will of Samuel Clewly was exhibited by Thomas Marshall before the court. Martin Wells became his surety to the amount of oe150.

WILLIAM MARSHALL
(16--1687)
The first definite record that we have of William Marshall was on Aug. 5, 1685, when he appeared before the Deputy Prerogative Court for Calvert County, and declared himself to be the greatest creditor of William Jenkins, deceased, of the same county.

William Marshall died in Calvert County during May of the year 1687, leaving a widow Elizabeth, and a young son Thomas. The widow soon afterwards married Samuel Clewly, a planter of Calvert County. Clewly was a connection of Thomas Tench, Gent., of Anne Arundel County.

In the course of the settlement of the estate of William Marshall, it developed that shortly before his death he had made a will giving all his land to his son Thomas, but the document could not be located. Cleuly and his wife, Elizabeth, who earlier had requested letters of administration upon the estate, now renounced the administration, stating that they had not "intermeddled with goods", and praying that Thomas Tench be appointed in their stead. This was done, and on Sept. 26, 1688, Tench exhibited an inventory of the personal effects before the court. (It should be noted that in the wording of the court William Marshall "died intestate.")

It seems probable that Samuel Clewly acquired the greater portion of the estate of William Marshall by marrying the widow. About the year 1700 Clewly was in possession of "Cox's Folly," containing 50 acres; also "Cox's Choice" of 400 acres, and 65 acres of "Defence."

Elizabeth, widow of William Marshall, died before her second husband, Samuel Clewly. (The name Clewly is sometimes Cleuly, Cluley, Chiley, Cleyly, or Ceely.)

The will of Samuel Cluley, dated Oct. 10, 1719, and probated Feb. 1, 1720, devised to Mary Marshall, daughter of Thomas Marshall by Margaret, his wife, his dwelling-plantation, being a part of the "Defence." In case she should die without heirs, then it is to be given to Thomas Marshall the Younger, the son of the said Thomas Marshall by the said Margaret his wife. He appointed his "well-beloved Friend and Son-in-law, Thomas Marshall," as whole and sole executor. (He means step-son.) Wills, Liber 15, folio 286. 1650 - 1719 Elizabeth Cox 69 69 The Defence plantation (65 acres) and dwelling-house was left to Elizabeths' granddaughter , Mary Marshall, dau. of Thomas Sr., by Samuel Clewly, Elizabeth's second husband. Property had come to him by marrying Wm. Marshall's widow, Elizabeth.. Hurley, The Griffith Gamily of Maryland: Samuel named heir of Philip Soones will 30 March 1685. Faith Gongo will 23 Feb 1693 names Samuel overseer of estate. Samuel executor will of John Whipps of 10 December 1716, Calvert County.
