"Merida R Browning, 84, of 21 South Wells, died at 1 A.M. today at Marshall Browning Hospital after an illness of 10 years.
"Browning, a retired miner, was born November 14, 1877, in Plumfield, a son of Lumm and Alice (Brown) Browning, both deceased. He was a resident of Du Quoin during his adult life. He was married on December 06, 1904 in Du Quoin to Bessie Pierce, who survives.
"He was a member of the First Methodist Church.
"He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Paul (Ruby) Schlueter, Oak Lawn, a son Carroll Browning, Chicago, and seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
"A son, Cecil, is deceased, as are a sister and two brothers.
"Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Saturday, January 20, at Schroeder Funeral Home with Reverend Paul Sims officiating.
"Burial will be in Old Du Quoin cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 6 P.M. Friday."

"Mrs. Bessie Browning, 79, Passes Away; Services Thursday

"Mrs. Bessie Browning, 79, widow of Merida Browning, died early today in Marshall Browning Hospital after being in failing health several years.
"Mrs. Browning, who made her home at 21 Soyth Wells street, was born October 14, 1887, in New Burnside, a daughter of the late William Silas and Abigaile (Lecroy) Pierce. On December 6, 1904, in Du Quion, she was married to Browning who died in 1962.
"A resident of Du Quion all her adult life, Mrs. Browning was a member of the Christian church.
"Survivors include a son, Carroll Browning of Chicago; a daughter, Mrs. Ruby Gilby of Oak Lawn; a brother, Earl Pierce, and a sister, Mrs. Alta Ridgeway, both of Du Quion; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
"One son also preceded her in death.
"Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday from the Keeling Funeral Home with burial in Old Du Quion Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 6 p.m. Wednesday."

Cecil had no middle name but he wanted one, so he used the name Charles.

Cecil was in a fight when he was about 9 years of age and damaged his lungs. At the age of 11 or 12, he had to start smoking as that was the only way to get the medication into his lungs. He would have to go to the pharmacy to get the cigarettes.

Cecil owned his own truck and delivered coal while in Perry County, IL. He was making a decent living but his wife Helen had set her sights on the big city and they moved to Chicago living in Chicago Cecil became a brick layer. He would tuck point inside furnaces.

His mode of dress was always a white shirt, tie, overcoat and hat.
