Mary Jane was born on September 11th, 1852 in Taylor Co., KY. Mary Jane's father was Green Berry Underwood and her mother was Mary Rachel "Polly" Sprowls. Her paternal grandparents were Hiram Underwood and Celia Buley. She had four brothers and five sisters, named William B., Eli "Pap", Green Berry, Hiram Jackson, Sarah "Sally" N., Elizabeth, Ursula, Celia Betty and Jane. She was the fourth oldest of the ten children. She had two half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Alfred Thomas, John Logan, Rosetta, Mattie Green, Lona Bell and Grace Ann.-
