General Thomas was born on May 12th, 1869. General Thomas' father was William A. Underwood and his mother was Mahala Skaggs. His paternal grandparents were Anderson Underwood and Priscilla Milby. He had a brother and four sisters, named Calloway, Mahala, Sallie, Priscilla D. and Julia A.. He was the second oldest of the six children. He had three half-brothers named Anderson, William and Samuel A.. He died at the age of 83 on November 5th, 1952 in KY. He was buried in 1952 in Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery, LaRue Co., KY.-
