1st Earl of Atholl John was born about 1440 in Earlshire, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. 1st Earl of Atholl John's father was Sir James Stuart and his mother was Joan de Beaufort. His paternal grandparents were 1st Baron of Lorn John Stewart and Isabel Ergadia. He had two brothers named Earl of Buchan James and Andrew. He was the oldest of the three children.
