Alexander was born about 1315 in Dreghorn, Ayrshire, Scotland.1 Alexander's father was Sir Alan Stewart of Dreghorn and his mother was Marion Cameron. His paternal grandparents were John of Bonkyl Stewart and Margaret de Bonkyl; his maternal grandparents were John Cameron and <Unknown>. He had a brother and a sister, named Walter and Elizabeth.
