Charles Vernon Shipley, Sr. was born the 29th of October, 1884 in Harrisburg, Arkansas.(1) He married 1) Eloda Saphronia Lavender the 12th of June, 1907 in Mena, Polk County, Arkansas. She was born the 1st of August, 1886 in Elmo, Banner County, Kansas to George Agustus Lavender and Ida Estella Cooley. They had four children before their separation in about 1918.(2) Eloda placed their three daughters in the Masonic Home in Covina, California in August 1918. At about this same time she sent their son to live with her parents, George and Ida, on their farm in Willows, Glenn County, California.(3) His 1918 draft registration card has him living in Brooklyn, New York. During the 1920 census he was in Columbus, Ohio as a lodger in a hotel. His occupation was listed as salesman. Charles traveled to England between 1922 and 1928. (4) He withdrew from the Santa Monica Masonic Lodge in 1929.(5) He married 2) ____ ____ between 1928 and 1939, probably in England, where she died.(6) The 14th of September, 1939 he left London, England, alone, aboard the S.S. Collingsworth and arrived at Port Philadelphia the 28th of September, 1939. He married 3) Margaret Mott between 1939 and 1943 and had two more children named Frances and Charles Vernon Shipley.(7) He died the 10th of December, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois.(8) Eloda died the 22nd of November, 1962 in Chula Vista, San Diego County, California.

2. Arlene Frances (Shipley) Farley says Eloda, her grandmother, swore that she and Charles never divorced. According to Lynne Chandler's research there is no record of a divorce decree in the Los Angeles courts between 1918 and 1920.
3. According to Arlene, Charles Vernon, Jr. went to live with his grandparents at around the age of four.
4. Charles Vernon Shipley, Jr. saw his father about 1922, at the age of nine, when his dad gave him a 4-10 shot gun and said good-bye. Arlene has a photo of Charles, Sr. in England dated 1928.

1922 June 22nd Charles is in Modesto, California at the wedding of his brother Arthur Shipley.
1928 October 10th Charles is in London, England – Picture with date taken In his office.
Somewhere between 1928 and 1939 Charles remarries and his 2nd wife dies in London, England. (letter from T.W. Shipley) Also Charles is listed as widowed on ships log.
1939 Charles boards ship SS COLLINGSWORTH from London, England, leaving September 14th 1939 and arriving at Port Philadelphia, on September 28 1939. Address given as 221 N. La Salle, Chicago. Illinois. Listed as widowed

Charles was still living in Cook Co. Chicago, Illinois Apparently, marries for the 3rd time to a Margaret Mott. They have 2 children a daughter Frances and a son Charles Vernon Jr.

Charles dies on December 10, 1943 at age 59. In Cook County, Chicago, Illinois, although, Information on Charles death certificate states age 56. and that he was born in 1887 not 1884, in Memphis Tennessee. Instead of Arkansas.

Charles V. Shipley
Charles V. Shipley, 56 years old, managing director of the Canadian enterprises of the Sheldon Claire company, 520 North Michigan avenue, died yesterday in Wesley Memorial hospital. He is survived by his widow, Margaret, 640 North Wabash avenue; a daughter, Frances, and a son, Charles Jr. The funeral will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the chapel at 1820 South Michigan avenue.
Notes:
It is said that Charles was to have re-married. His Father, Thomas W. Shipley states in a letter that “C.V’s wife died in London”. I think her
death was before he came to the States in 1939, as he was traveling alone.
Charles’s sister Eva Shipley Bowler and her husband Paul were also living in the Chicago area, In the 1930’s.
Charles states in documents that his date of birth is 29th of October. Some have it noted as the 19th of October.
