1st Earl of Gowrie William was born about 1541 in Ruthven Castle, Perthshire, Scotland. 1st Earl of Gowrie William's father was 13th Laird of Ruthven Patrick Ruthven and his mother was Janet Douglas. His paternal grandparents were 12th Laird of Ruthven William Ruthven and Janet Halyburton. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Patrick, George, Archibald, James, Alexander, Jean and Isabel. He was the oldest of the eight children. He died in May 1584 in Executed for treason against King James IV.General Notes

William Ruthven, 4th Lord Ruthven, 1st Earl of Gowrie (c. 1541-1584) was, like his father Patrick, prominent in the political intrigues of the period and was also concerned in the Rizzio murder. In 1582 he devised the plot to seize King James VI of Scotland known as the Raid of Ruthven. He was the last-known custodian of the famous silver casket containing the letters alleged to have been written by Mary Queen of Scots to Bothwell. In 1581 he was created earl of Gowrie, but all his honors were forfeited when he was attainted and executed in May, 1584.
