Polly (Polly ) 
Polly, known as Polly , was born in 1788 in Culpeper Co., VA.. Polly 's father was Thomas BYWATERS III and her mother was Winney (Winney). Her maternal grandparents were Joseph T. Norman and Mary READ. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Robert, Hankerson Reed, Joseph, Kittie, Sallie and Sarah. She was the third oldest of the eight children. She died about June 1849 in Warren Co., VA..General Notes
Her will was dated 9/25/1845, Warren Co., VA. Probated 6/18/1849, Warren Co., VA.
Her real name was Mary, as shown by her will referred to below, although she was called Polly in her father's will dated the 23 Feb. 1822, which described her as the "widow of Thomas Amiss, deceased." A letter signed by Elton Waller, a neice of Thomas Amiss, dated "Mattoon, Illinois, May 27, 1873," stated that "Thomas Amiss married Miss Polly Bywaters. They had five boys and four daughters."

(1) The will of Mary (Polly) Amiss, dated the 25 Sept. 1845, probated the 3rd Monday in June, 1849, and recorded in Warren County, Virginia, will book "A" page 470, after providing (1) for the payment of her just debts devised (2) the sum of $220.00 to her son, Joseph B. Amiss, in trust for the children of her daughter, Eliza A. Strother; (3) to her daughter, Catherine Steele, the sum of $230.00 and a negro woman, Dolly; (4 ) to her son Robert B. Amiss, the sum of $220.00; (5) to her daughter Mary Ann Amiss, a negro boy, William Henry, and $175.00 with certain furniture; and provided that her son, John W. Amiss, should have a portion equal to his sister last named; (6) to her son, Thomas I. Amiss, the sum o f $160.00; (7) to her granddaughter, Ann Lucretia Pierce, the sum of $ 60.00 to be held in trust for her until she becomes of age or marries; ( 8) to her granddaughter, Mary Catherine Strother, a bed and furniture; ( 9) the residue of her estate to be divided among her daughters, Catherine Steele, Mary Ann Amiss, and her granddaughter, Mary Catherine Strother.
