Robert was born about 1285 in Carlaverock Castle, Dumfries, Scotland.1   Robert's father was Sir John de Maxwell of Pollock and Calderwook and his mother was <Unknown>.  His paternal grandparents were Sheriff Aymer de Maxwell and Mary McGeachan.  He was an only child.2
