Mattie, known as Mattie, was born in 1888. Mattie's father was George Walton WHITEHURST Sr. and her mother was Fannie Thomas VOWLES. Her maternal grandparents were James Henry VOWLES Md and Sarah Martha Wallace NORMAN. She had four brothers and a sister, named John Norman, James, George Walton, Joseph Slaughter and Vivian Aubrey. She was the youngest of the six children.
