Eleanor's father was John Hughes Sr. and her mother was Sarah. Her paternal grandparents were Francis Hughes Sr. and Christine. She had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Francis, Aaron, Margaret, Christiana and Clarissa. She was the youngest of the seven children.
