John D. was born on September 5th, 1808 in Mercer Co. KY.1 John D.'s father was Edward Goodnight and his mother was Sarah "Sally" Dye. His maternal grandparents were Avery Dye and Sarah "Sally" Puckett. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Avery, Harrison, Edward, William D., Lucinda Elizabeth, Nancy, Sarah Bellis and Martha Jane. He was the oldest of the nine children.General Notes
