John was born in 1164 in England.1 John's father was Baron Cluny & Oswestry William FitzAlan III and his mother was Mary de Lacy. His paternal grandparents were William FitzAlan II and Isabel de Say; his maternal grandparents were Lord Meath Hugh de Lacy and Rohesia de Clare. He had a brother named William.
