Joan was born in 1251 in Curry Mallet, Langport, Somerset, England. Joan's father was William 'Fort' de Vivonne and her mother was Maud (Matilda) de Rochechouart. Her paternal grandparents were Hugh de Vivonia and Mabel de Vivonia. She had a sister named Cicely. She was the older of the two children.
