John W. was born in 1849 in Grayson Co, KY. John W.'s father was Thomas J. Elder and his mother was Martha Sirles. His maternal grandparents were Joseph Sirles and Martha Roberts. He had two brothers and six sisters, named William, Willmon, Pharaba Elizabeth, Fanny, Martha J., Peanna, Emeline and Sarah T.. He was the third oldest of the nine children.General Notes
