Joyce was born in 1258 in Colne Engaine, Laxton, Northamptonshire, England. Joyce's father was John De Engaine and her mother was Joan De Greinville. Her maternal grandparents were Sir Gilbert De Greinville and Joyouse de Hallaton. She had a brother and a sister, named Nicholas and Lady Joan. She was the oldest of the three children.-
