William was born in 1167 in Sessay, Yorkshire, England.1   William's father was Marmaduke Darel and his mother was Aceria.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Darel and <Unknown>. He had a brother named Marmaduke.  He was the older of the two children.  He died at the age of 59 in 1226.1
