Her maternal grandparents were Benjamin Franklin SHIPLEY and Sarah "Sally" BURKETT. She had a brother and three sisters, named Miles Nathan, Susan Angeline, Sarah Elizabeth and Hanna Retta. She was the oldest of the five children. She had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named Marion Thomas, Saphronie J., Julietta Dade and Caldonia.
