Lewis' father was Joshua Childers and his mother was Frances (Frankie) Crane. His maternal grandparents were John T. Crane and Fannie Pond. He had five brothers and three sisters, named James, Nathaniel, John, Thomas, William, Lucy, Nancy and Susannah.¹
