Elizabeth's father was James Childers and her mother was Mahala Scott. Her paternal grandparents were Joshua Childers and Frances (Frankie) Crane; her maternal grandparents were <Unknown> and Mary (Polly) Scott. She had two brothers and six sisters, named William, Milton, Susan, Mary, Nancy, Martha, Harriet and Ellen. She was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
