Janet was born in 1504 in Balfour, Fifeshire, Scotland. Janet's father was John Bethune and her mother was Elizabeth Monypenny. Her paternal grandparents were John Bethune and Marjory Boswell. She had five brothers and four sisters, named Walter, Thomas, George, James, John, Beatrice, Elizabeth, Margaret and David. She was the second youngest of the ten children.-
