Eliza was born in 1838 in Putnam Co., IN.. Eliza's father was John Samuel BROWNING Sr. and her mother was Beulah "Betsy" (Betsy) REEVES. Her paternal grandparents were Edmund Woodville BROWNING and ???? (Mrs. Edmund Woodville) BROWNING. She had three brothers and eight sisters, named Edward, John S., Thompson, Caroline B., Mary, Nancy, Amanda, Ann J., Sarah C., Emma and Cordelia. She was the sixth oldest of the twelve children.-
