Morgan was born in February 1846 in Grayson Co, KY.  Morgan's father was James Cockriel and his mother was Lucinda Sirles.  His maternal grandparents were Joseph Sirles and Martha Roberts. He had four brothers and five sisters, named William, Marshall, Martin, James Anderson, Sarah, Harriett, Sarilda, Louisa and Clarissa.  He was the third youngest of the ten children.
