Joel was born on August 3rd, 1744.1   Joel's father was Daniel Whipple and his mother was Anne Unknown.  His paternal grandparents were Eleazer Whipple and Alice Angell. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Comfort, Preserved, Eree, Job, Alice, Ame, Anne and Sarah. He had three half-brothers and a half-sister, named Daniel, Joseph, Eleazer and Mary.1
