Jesse was born in 1796 in Lavonia, Franklin, Georgia.1   Jesse's father was Marchant Thomas and his mother was Jemima Hamilton. He had six brothers and three sisters, named James, Joseph, Hamilton, Reuben, Isaac, Elisha, Jane, Mary Elizabeth Betsey and Catherine.  He was the second oldest of the ten children.1
