1   Sarah's father was John Strain and her mother was Miriam Strayhorn.  Her maternal grandparents were Gilbert Strayhorn and Margaret Roan. She had six brothers and two sisters, named Alexander, David, Gilbert, James, Samuel, William, Elizabeth and Mary.1
