John was born on August 7th, 1856.1   John's father was John Steele and his mother was Mary Ann Elmhirst.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Steele and Mary Beckett; his maternal grandparents were Joseph Elmhirst and Mary Ann Toyne. He had four brothers and six sisters, named James, Richard, Joseph, Robert, Mary, Jane, Hannah, Margaret, Marion and Harriet E..  He was the fourth youngest of the eleven children.1
