Sumner was born on October 20th, 1865.1   Sumner's father was Dexter Aldrich Smith and his mother was Elvira Johnson.  His paternal grandparents were Charles H. Smith and Drusilla Unknown. He had two brothers and a sister, named Charles Henry, Edward and Sarah.1
