Joel was born about 1826.1   Joel's father was McLin Sills and his mother was Cinthia Holliman.  His maternal grandparents were Samuel Holliman and Salome McCarthy. He had three brothers and four sisters, named William, Thomas, Albert, Betsy, Emeline, Malissa and Rebecca.1
