Firman was born in 1873 in Scott, Tennessee.1   Firman's father was Sampson Reed and his mother was Sarah Phillips.  His paternal grandparents were Isaac Reed and Phariba [Rachel] Hatfield. He had four brothers named Andrew, Oma, Balaam and Redman.  He was the oldest of the five children. He had five half-brothers and six half-sisters, named James, Isaac, Miles, Campbell, James, Rebecca, Emily, Starling, Rachel, Katherine and Clementine.1
