Joseph was born in 1839 in Plattsburgh, Clinton County, New York.  Joseph's father was Paul Ouimet and his mother was Catherine D'Orleans dit Doribeau.  His paternal grandparents were Michel Ouimet and Josephte Hubert dit LaCroix; his maternal grandparents were Antoine D'Orleans dit Doribeau and Catherine Champigny. He had two brothers and a sister, named Jacques James, Paul and Caroline.  He was the second oldest of the four children.  He died at the age of 34 on September 13th, 1873 in Plattsburgh, Clinton County, New York.  He was buried in Plattsburgh Old Roman Catholic Cemetery.
