Martha Elizabeth was born on March 5th, 1844 in Beaufort Dist., SC.1 Martha Elizabeth's father was John Pringle Mew and her mother was Emily Ann Smart. Her paternal grandparents were Macamee Mew and Ann Rutledge Smith. She had four brothers and five sisters, named John Rufus, Henry, James Alexander, Edward C., Florence Ann, Julia Leocardia, Laura Josephine, Mary Ellen and Harriet Isabel. She was the second oldest of the ten children. She died at the age of 80 on February 5th, 1925.1 General Notes
