Russel's father was Albert Hopp and his mother was Olga Kreft.  His paternal grandparents were Charles Hopp and Johanna Maria Adrian. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Herbert, Albert, Arthur, Paul, William, Adeline, Elna, Ida, Lora and Mata.
