1   Miriam's father was James Hart and her mother was Nancy Strayhorn.  Her maternal grandparents were Gilbert Strayhorn and Margaret Roan. She had seven brothers and three sisters, named Davis, Gilbert, James, John, Joseph, Samuel, William, Elizabeth, Jane and Sarah.1
