John was born in November 1684.  John's father was John Grubb and his mother was Frances Vane.  His paternal grandparents were John Grubbe and Helen Vivian; his maternal grandparents were Henry Vane and Frances Wray. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Emanuel, Joseph, Henry, Samuel, Nathaniel, Peter, Charity and Phebe.
