Gene's father was Clifford Branch and his mother was Gussie Hall. His maternal grandparents were Thomas Jefferson Hall and Rebecca Crosby. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Curtis, Jim, Lem, Living, Faye, Living, Mattie Bell, Myrtle, Sadie and Tracy.
