Rhys was born about 1370 in Pentre Evan, Pembroke, Wales.1   Rhys' father was Llewelyn Bowen and his mother was Nest Vychan.  His paternal grandparents were Owen Bowen and Gwelliant Cantington. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Evan, Owen, Howel, Phillip, Tevan, Ann, Jane, Annest, Jows and Lucy.  He was the oldest of the eleven children.1
