Samuel was born on May 3rd, 1803 in Lifford, Donegal, Ireland.1   Samuel's father was Joseph McElhinney and his mother was Catherine Finley. He had a brother and a sister, named Robert and Margaret.  He was the youngest of the three children.  He died at the age of 71 on May 8th, 1874 in Iowa.1
