Mary Helen's father was Charles Madison Back and her mother was Molly Margaret Huffaker. Her paternal grandparents were Martin Grider Back and Pauline J. Graves. She had three brothers and three sisters, named John Martin, Thomas Coleman, Sam Waddel, Pauline Olivia, Sarah Margaret and Flora Nell. She had a half-brother named Charles Ciercy.-
