Robert was born about 1434 in The Hollins Warley, Halifax, West Riding, Yorkshire. Robert's father was Richard Waterhouse and his mother was Eliza Claye. His paternal grandfather was John Waterhouse and his paternal grandmother is Alice Rooks. He had two brothers and a sister, named John, Richard and Margaret. He was the youngest of the four children.
